Preatty Much Nomads, a content marketing agency, were fed up with planning in Excel spreadsheets or Trello and came up with the idea of a tool that can really help them to be even more productive in what they already do best. But the ambition wasn't just to make a tool for internal use, but rather to make a product, that can appeal to wider audience of copywriters, marketing managers ets.
To bring this amazing idea to life, they were looking for an experienced product designer who could help them with the product development process, from ideation to delivery, ensuring that the final product was a success.
The first stage of production was brainstorming and idea making. The goal of this phase was to generate ideas for a app that would help users plan and organize their content. To kick off the project, the client assembled a team of 2 designers (with me including as a lead product designer), 2 product owners (CEO and CTO of the Contesaur), 1 developer and 1 UX writer.
We started with the pain points that our target audience considered and pinpointed the features that would be most useful to each persona we had. Then we developed ideas for the app and narrowed it down to a few basic ideas.
Once we had a clear idea of what the app would do, we created user journeys and flows to map out the user experience. We wanted to ensure that the app was easy to use and that users could quickly access the features they needed.
Our team started by creating a user flow diagram that outlined the main steps a user would take to accomplish their goals within the app.
From there, we created more detailed user journeys for each type of user, such as bloggers, social media managers, and content creators. Each user journey mapped out the specific steps a user would take to plan and organize their content using the app, including how they would navigate through the app, what features they would use, and what information they would need to input.
With the user journeys in place, our small team created prototypes of the app to test with users.
Firstly, we used a low-fidelity prototype to test the overall flow and functionality of the app before moving on to a high-fidelity prototype and wireframes. This first round of testing was conducted internally with all copywriters and marketing managers at the agency.
The other rounds of testing were public with a diverse group of users to gather feedback on the app.
In the second one for example users interacted with few of the basic screens and features. Based on the feedback we received, we made changes to the app and iterated on the design.
The third round of testing was conducted with a high-fidelity finalized wireframe of the app, which included more features and functionality and was primary used to get an idea of how users interacted with overall flow of the app. We again gathered feedback from users and made further changes to the design and functionality of the app based on their feedback.
By conducting multiple rounds of user testing, our project team was able to gather valuable insights from users and ensure that the final product met their needs and expectations.
Once we had a solid understanding of what users wanted and how they would use the app, me and other designer started designing and finalizing the app. We created a visual design that was clean, simple, and easy to use. By that time, the logo and the final identity design was already provided from the external branding designer.
Our mini design team focused on creating a user interface that was intuitive and easy to navigate. We used a simple flat color scheme and typography that made it easy for users to read and understand the content on the app.
With the design complete, we delivered the final product to users. We launched the app and started gathering feedback from users. The agency also tracked user behavior to see how they were using the app and where we could make improvements.
Based on the feedback we received, our team made changes to the app and continued to iterate on the design. We also added new features and functionality based on user requests.
Overall, the product design process for the Contesaur App was a success. By involving users in the process and testing the app at every stage, me and the other team members were able to create a product that met their needs and was easy to use.
Moreover, the client was fully satisfied with the product design. The app was able to simplify the content planning process, improve organization and productivity, and ultimately help not just their agency, but also their payed customers achieve their marketing goals.
